Why XTB tops our beginner list
Three things rarely come together in one broker: a genuinely excellent platform, real stock ownership at zero commission, and heavyweight regulation. XTB — a Warsaw-listed broker with over twenty years of history, supervised by the FCA, KNF, CySEC and DFSA — is the rare case where they do.
There is no minimum deposit. You can open an account, buy one fractional share of an ETF, and learn with real money measured in tens of euros. Combined with an education hub that actually teaches rather than upsells, this is the platform we most often recommend to someone making their very first trade — and, unusually, it remains a strong choice long after the beginner phase ends.
Opening an account: the walkthrough
The application is a single online flow: personal details, ID verification, and the regulator-mandated appropriateness test about your knowledge and experience. Approval for straightforward cases is typically same-day. Choose your account currency carefully at this step — EUR, USD, GBP or PLN depending on the entity — because it decides where conversion fees will or won’t apply later. A euro account buying European ETFs pays none; the same account buying US stocks converts at 0.5%.
Funding options include bank transfer, cards and popular e-wallets; card and wallet deposits usually credit quickly. Withdrawals above modest thresholds are free (verify the current threshold for your entity on XTB’s site) and processing is generally fast by industry standards.
xStation 5: the in-house platform done right
Most brokers either rent MetaTrader or ship a weak custom app. xStation 5 is the exception, and it is the core of the experience. Open it and you get a fast charting workspace with a full indicator set, a market-sentiment widget showing the live long/short split of XTB clients, an equity screener, a stocks scanner, and one-click trading with the real-time cost of every position displayed on the ticket — spread, commission, conversion, everything.
Details that show the platform was designed rather than assembled:
- The order calculator converts lots into concrete money: margin required, pip value, potential loss at your stop level. Beginners stop guessing what a position actually risks.
- Built-in performance statistics analyze your own closed trades — win rate, average gain vs loss, equity curve. Most brokers hide this because it is sobering; XTB ships it.
- The mobile app is a real platform, not a companion toy — full charting and order management, not a stripped viewer.
What you give up is the MetaTrader ecosystem. If your strategy depends on MT4 expert advisors or you want cTrader’s depth-of-market tools, XTB is not your broker; look at Pepperstone — the trade-offs are laid out in XTB vs Pepperstone.
The fee structure, honestly
| Product | Cost |
|---|---|
| Stocks & ETFs | 0% commission up to €100,000 monthly volume; 0.2% (min €10) above |
| Forex CFDs | spreads from ~0.5 pips on the standard account, no commission |
| Index & commodity CFDs | spread-based, competitive mid-pack |
| Currency conversion | 0.5% when trading outside your account currency |
| Inactivity fee | ~€10/month, only after 12 months of inactivity |
| Withdrawals | free above the entity’s threshold |
Interpretation: for stock and ETF investors below €100k monthly volume — which is nearly everyone reading this — XTB is effectively free. For forex, 0.5-pip spreads are good but not raw-account territory; high-volume scalpers will pay less at IC Markets. One caveat worth repeating: fractional shares and 0% pricing are subject to the fair-usage volume cap, so verify current terms on XTB’s site if you plan serious size.
Safety
Listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange with published, audited financials; client money segregated under each regulator’s rules; four supervisory authorities across Europe and the Middle East; and participation in national compensation schemes for eligible clients. Our trust score: 9.0. The one structural note is the same as for every CFD-capable broker: the leveraged side of the product is where retail accounts lose money, and XTB’s own disclosure states the majority do. The platform’s excellent risk tooling mitigates that; it cannot eliminate it.
Education that isn’t a sales funnel
XTB’s education hub deserves its own paragraph because it drives our support score of 8.6. Structured courses run from “what is a share” through technical analysis to platform mechanics, in multiple languages, with local-language webinars in its main markets. Support itself is responsive and human — live chat and phone in business hours, email otherwise — and questions get answered by people who evidently use the platform.
Verdict
8.8 / 10. The best balance of platform quality, cost and safety we score in the multi-asset field. Scalpers will find tighter forex pricing at IC Markets, US-market specialists get more depth at Interactive Brokers — see XTB vs Interactive Brokers — and copy-trading fans belong on eToro. For everyone else in Europe, XTB is the default answer, and XTB vs eToro shows how close that call is.
